Kicks N Licks – The expedition (ep)

cks n licks

The San Diegan duo Kicks N Licks, aka Andy Joplin and Jerrod Jordan, just kicked out their latest EP The Expedition. The duo loves to play with the lines between Bass Music sub-genres, and they continue in that tradition for their best release yet.

Ever feel like you wanted more air horn in your trap music? I certainly didn’t think I did, but KnL proved me wrong. In the track Hit Em With The Horns, their modulation of the iconic sound proves to be quite catchy, especially when they hit the second drop. The EP quickly shifts to drum & bass for the track After Hours, which spins back & forth between a traditional DnB sound and chiller half-tempo sections. Northern Lights is a solid blend of bass music. A signature synth line rings out in the upper mids, while KnL plays with the pads and bass underneath, all the while keeping beat with a four-on-the-floor kick & snare pattern.

The highlight of this release for me is the lead-off title track Expedition, a mind-numbing ambient dubstep song. Don’t take my word for it though, listen and choose your own favorite. I’ve also included my top picks from their earlier releases. Enjoy and may the Bass be with you.

Something for everyone on Buygore’s Fresh Blood compilation

Buygore Borgore dubstep

We never really know what to make of Borgore. That’s a discussion for later perhaps. Right now, though, we’re very much getting into this new Buygore Fresh Blood compilation, a free download of eight tracks from some seriously talented up-and-coming artists. On the roster we’ve got Darius Carter, Laetho, Noclu, Padu, Salute and Chee.

So what have we got on the album? London’s Darius Carter has two tracks. Psilocybin is a dreamy, laid-back tune, a tantalising fusion of breaks and grime. XX is straight-up chillstep, with plenty of bass. There are also two tune from Noclu, whose recent collab with CoMa is divine. Resistance is a heavy, pulsating orgy of grimey, angry bass and screwface vibes, while Synthia explores the limits of gloomy, unsettling synths and disturbing melodies.

Laetho from Belgium drops a throbbing, pulsating slab of twisted electronic music, marking him as a producer to watch in the future. Padu, a 17-year-old beatmaker from Aberdeen, Scotland, unleashes all kinds of industrial-tinged energy with his track Anxiety, one that will pleases fans of the more stripped-back forms of dubstep.

Voltt by Salute is relentless with its timestretched, unnerving vocal snippets and trappy drums, driven home by dirty pads and deep, dark bass. Suicide Mouse from Chee is glitchy as heck, with the BPMs cranked right up, resembling something along the lines of unhinged horror drumstep.

It’s not a completely natural ensemble of producers and tunes, but as a showcase rising talent, most of whom we’d never heard of, there’s a lot to be excited about, particularly in the form of Darius Carter.

Inspected dubstep

The good folks at Inspected have curated an album of some of the most exciting producers around at the moment. Not only that, but they’re giving it away for free. What more could you really ask for? The tunes on Power by Inspected range from sublime chillout numbers to bass-heavy growlers. The opening track sets the tone with the excellent ZES remix of Asa and Stumbleine’s Without You, a track we recently bigged up. It’s an absolute beauty.

From there, we explore the dark, industrial sounds of the likes of Barbarix and Culprate with DET & Silanta delivering a masterclass in erratic drum patterns. On our journey, we get into some bass, dubstep, future garage, drum n bass, tech house, grime, raw electro — everything really. Kursa and Bijou throw down some dirty breaks and Sam Gellaitry lets rip with a deep, techy 4/4 smasher.

xKore takes a breather from his usual sound with a wonky piano house tune under his Sonny Banks monicker, while omnipresent Sorrow reminds us why he’s the don of rough-and-ready garage beats. Not to be outdone, Thinnen throws one down for the dancefloor and as the album draws to a close, Vanilla is there with a cheeky dose of funk.

All in all, it’s a yarn spun by some of contemporary dance music’s most gifted storytellers. An extravagant feast of boundless basslines, dystopian drums and sumptuous synths.
